Engine Pods
While the the side panels received the same armor and rib treatment as the roof I got on with another of the most important parts of a space ship: the engines!
I created the engine pods from scratch using the same method as the landing bay: starting with foam insulation, I carved out the shapes, glued them onto a 2x4 and coated them with Plasti-Paste.
After all the sanding and Bondo, I removed the foam leaving just the shells behind. By affixing them to the 2x4 this automatically made a cut out that matched the space it was being fitted to on the case side.
Before that though, it was time to add more ship detail to them, but rather than applying ribs and armor over them I cut parts away instead to create and reveal rib and panel shapes.
Not stopping there, I added further exhaust ports for effect from simple pens and beads I had lying around. They were held in firmly by putty then sanded down smooth to the curved edge to the styrene end caps for a consistent and even look. The main engine pods were then primed for painting like the rest of it to give it an even finish.
After much deliberation about how to light the engines, I resorted to relying on the residual glow from inside the case to reflect out from the gap left on the side panel. The ends were sealed off with more styrene plastic cut, folded and glued to shape, before having octagonal mesh inserted behind this to allow the light to escape and give it a grilled exhaust look.
